Harpur Palate Binghamton University Undergraduate Writing Contest

Binghamton Undergraduates have the chance to submit to the Harpur Palate Writing Contest once a year in the Spring semester. The contest was created by David Alter, an intern of Harpur Palate, to help connect the undergraduate community to our literary journal.

We are proud to announce that the winner for the 2012 Writing Contest is Erin Goodwin. She read from her prize winning piece at our launch party (photos below from the party), and also received the full collection of Harpur Palate.

Contest Winner: Erin Goodwin's "Pretty Bird" (please click on the link to read).

Honorable mentions include the poem "Zoa Avenue" by Chelsie Malyszek, and fiction submission "Her Psychology Today" by Deepan Ghimiray.

Erin Goodwin is a transfer student at Binghamton University, having previously studied at Northern Arizona University and the University of Colorado in Denver. She is currently majoring in English and Creative Writing. Her story "Pretty Bird" was written for her Intermediate Creative Writing workshop with professor Joe Weil. She lives in Binghamton and works as a bookseller at a local book store.

Deepan Ghimiray studies English and Creative Writing at Binghamton University. His previous work has been published in the East End Elements. After graduation he plans to teach English abroad and continue writing.

Chelsie Malyszek is an undergraduate Creative Writing major at Binghamton University. She aspires to be nothing more than wildly happy despite the fact that a writing career may leave her dirt poor. She has recently released her first chapbook From Under the Lilac Tree. This is her second publication.
